Spanky’s, situated within Nana Entertainment Plaza (NEP) in Bangkok, is one of the many go-go bars in the area. Among the numerous agogo bars within NEP, standing out is no small feat, and Spanky’s achieves this with its distinctive theme.
However, a theme can only truly make an impact when fully embraced. In Japan, maid cafes have carved out their own niche, but Bangkok’s aircraft-themed DC-10 bar failed to make a significant impression. Spanky’s, to its credit, utilizes its theme primarily to attract patrons. Once inside, visitors can appreciate a rather impressive agogo experience.
Devoted readers may recall that I mentioned Spanky’s in both my 2018 and 2019 reviews of the go-go bar scene in Bangkok. It would have been impractical to provide a comprehensive summary of the city’s agogo bars without discussing this establishment; it is that popular and prominent. Unfortunately, the pandemic made it nearly impossible for me to carry out the Bangkok go-go bar review I had planned for 2020. However, this situation has afforded me the opportunity to explore places like Spanky’s in greater depth.
As the name suggests, Spanky’s revolves around the concept of spanking. While this is a central element, it is not the sole focus. The logo, featuring a red handprint on a derriere, provides a clear clue, as do the ladies stationed at the entrance playfully tapping passersby on their posteriors with harmless yet noisy foam rods. This attention-grabbing tactic serves to draw people inside. However, it is evident that the ladies genuinely enjoy their playful actions, even when it doesn’t result in more customers.
Inside Spanky’s, you will find a standard go-go bar with a tiered seating arrangement. The typical stage with metal poles occupies the central focus, with most seats oriented around it. In the rear, there is a stand-up shower area with glass walls where the performers wash off in the nude. It bears a resemblance to a similar setup in New York’s Sin City from years ago, but the dancers at Spanky’s are more attractive and completely nude.
Staff, service, and overall experience: The sensuality and allure of the shower show at Spanky’s only serve to underscore the lack of comfortable seating options. There are only a few chairs that provide a good view of the shower, but these same chairs offer almost no clear sightline to the main stage, which is regrettable.
Nonetheless, the presence of a multitude of attractive women more than compensates for the less-than-ideal seating arrangement. Most Thai agogo bars now employ a significant number of female staff, but the ratio of attractive women to others is not as high as it used to be. Spanky’s, on the other hand, features numerous fit and attractive Thai women in their twenties to captivate your attention. They are all quite friendly and enjoyable. In between their playful foam paddle activities, they are more than willing to sit down for lady drinks. Naturally, there is a barfine option, but the atmosphere in the establishment leans more towards bar fun. While the ladies do leave with patrons willing to pay a couple of thousand Baht, they prefer visiting one of the short-time rooms within Nana Plaza over an overnight excursion elsewhere in the city.
Spanky’s distinguishes itself from other go-go bars for several reasons. The most apparent is its spanking theme, but as mentioned earlier, this alone is not enough. The enduring appeal and popularity of this place stem from its enjoyable atmosphere and the friendliness of the numerous attractive women within. It is evident that they know how to operate a successful go-go bar, even if it is not the world’s best by any means.
