The Nana Entertainment Plaza, situated on Sukhumvit Soi 4 in Bangkok, is widely recognized as one of the most renowned adult entertainment hubs globally. Positioned on the top floor of the NEP complex, two sizable go-go bars, namely Billboard and Butterflies, command attention. These establishments not only rank among the largest within Nana Plaza but are also acclaimed by many as some of the finest.
Over recent years, there has been considerable discourse concerning the evolution of Thai go-go bars. Long-time patrons reminisce about the bygone days, expressing discontent with the current state of affairs. Meanwhile, some have dismissed go-go bars as the domain of newcomers and tourists. Despite these debates, the bars persist, and for every one that closes, it seems two more spring up.
I have been documenting the agogos of Thailand for nearly a decade. It would be remiss not to pay attention to these venues while reporting on the commercial sex industry in the Land of Smiles. After all, go-go bars were among the first adult entertainment establishments targeting foreigners in the country, a legacy preserved at the Patpong Museum, while contemporary affairs can be scrutinized here.
Butterflies, located in Bangkok, is under the same ownership as Billboard, and while the two bars share similarities, they are distinct in their own right. Billboard may enjoy slightly greater renown and size, but Butterflies offers a spacious and uncluttered ambiance even when bustling with patrons and dancers. Visibility of the women on stage and in the jacuzzi is consistently unobstructed.
Traditional bleacher-style seating is found on the right side of the bar, while more comfortable lounge-style seats are available on the left. The provision of this variety is a welcomed feature. Butterflies boasts two substantial stages, frequently filled with dancers, in addition to the aforementioned large jacuzzi capable of accommodating multiple ladies.
The service staff at Butterflies exhibit attentiveness without being overbearing, a characteristic shared by the mamasan. Access to assistance or inquiries is readily available without persistent pressure to purchase drinks or “take a lady.”
Pricing at Butterflies is reasonable and aligns with the prevailing rates in Bangkok’s go-go bars. A standard beer is priced at 160 Baht, with lady drinks incurring a ten Baht surcharge. The barfine at Butterflies stands at 800 Baht ($25 USD). It’s worth noting that most ladies seem to prefer short-time arrangements in the nearby hourly hotel rooms within Nana Plaza, for which they commonly request 2,000 Baht ($62 USD) or more.
The go-go girls at Billboard number more than fifty at any given time, with occasional surges on Friday and Saturday nights that may approach one hundred. The ladies are attired in bikinis, with variations in styles and colors. White thongs appear to be a popular choice, although some don lacy lingerie, providing a pleasant contrast. A few even wear Playboy-style bunny ears on their heads, although these should not be confused with the avian-themed attire at Bangkok Bunnies.
For many patrons, the level of undress is of greater significance. While nudity is not as prevalent in Bangkok’s go-go bars as it once was, Butterflies remains one of the venues where a noteworthy amount of skin is on display. Groups of women perform topless bath shows in the jacuzzi area, which adds a more engaging dimension compared to the standard two-step on the stage.
As for the overall attractiveness of the women working at Butterflies, it’s observed that the average age and size of go-go girls in Bangkok appear to be increasing. However, within Butterflies, the majority of women are in their twenties and maintain a relatively fit physique. Some are notably slender, while others have more curvaceous figures. Nevertheless, there don’t seem to be any who are either overweight or advanced in years, a noteworthy observation in contemporary times.
In summary, Butterflies is undeniably one of the more popular go-go bars in Bangkok, and this popularity can be attributed to various factors. While location plays a role, as it is positioned within Nana Plaza, it’s worth noting that it occupies the top floor, requiring patrons to navigate past numerous bars and countless scantily clad women.
The primary allure of Butterflies unquestionably lies in the women. It’s worth mentioning that the overall attractiveness of the dancers at Butterflies may have experienced a slight decline over the years, though it still maintains a more attractive and fit staff than many other agogos within Nana Plaza. Of course, staff compositions in these bars can change from day to day, and beauty is ultimately a subjective matter.
Attractive women, however, are not the sole determining factor of a go-go bar’s appeal. A bar’s popularity is also shaped by the overall atmosphere it offers. Well-managed establishments with fair pricing and excellent customer treatment receive the most repeat visits, which is only logical.
Reputation and word-of-mouth also influence the clientele a go-go bar attracts, and with the internet, information spreads rapidly. Even newcomers and temporary tourists base their decisions on what they’ve heard and seen, reducing the chances of wandering into unfamiliar places. In this regard, Butterflies is undoubtedly well-managed, and the presence of many attractive women inside further enhances its appeal.
